Submerged stools at a swim up bar under a pavilion
Shade

Shade decides whether it gets used

A swim up bar in full July sun sits empty. The ones that work are under a pavilion or a solid cover, close enough to the kitchen that nobody has to cross the yard for a drink.

Two sides

One counter, two sides

The counter serves the stools in the water and the stools on the deck. Counter height, the footing under it and the plumbing for any sink all have to line up with the pool wall, so the bar gets designed with the pavilion, not added after.

Before you add one

Five things to settle at design

  • Water depth at the stools, so you sit instead of float
  • Which way the stools face: toward the TV and the yard, away from the afternoon sun
  • A step or ledge to get up onto the stool
  • Power and plumbing for the counter, a sink, a fridge, the TV
  • Lights under the counter and in the water for night
Common questions
How deep is the water at a swim up bar?

Deep enough to sit on the stool with the water around your waist, not so deep you float off it. The stools and the counter height get set together so the bar works from the water side and the deck side.

Can a swim up bar be added to an existing pool?

Rarely without major work. The stools, the bench and the bar wall are part of the shell, so a swim up bar is a decision for a new pool, made at design.

Costs for the pool and its features are on the pool cost page.
