The deck is usually the biggest surface in the backyard and the part people touch most. Material, color and layout decide how hot it gets, how it drains and how the yard looks from above.

You can mix them. Here is what each one is and what to watch for.
| Material | What it is | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Broom finished concrete | Clean and simple, with a texture that grips wet feet. | Concrete cracks at some point. Control joints decide where. |
| Slabs with turf inlays | Large concrete slabs separated by strips of turf. A modern grid that looks sharp from above. | Turf gets hot in direct sun and needs a clean edge and drainage. |
| Pavers | Individual units in many colors and patterns, and easy to replace one at a time. | They need a solid base so they do not settle. |
| Coping | The cap around the pool edge, in stone, tile or concrete. It sets the look of the edge. | It takes water, sun and bare feet every day, so material matters. |

Light colors stay cooler than dark ones, and any surface in full sun gets hot. Artificial turf runs hotter than concrete or real grass in direct sun, so it works best in strips or where there is shade.
When possible, yes. The coping, the deck drains and the slab around the pool tie into each other, and building them together means one schedule instead of two.
Angi puts a pool deck at $3,000 to $12,000 nationally. More on the pool cost page.
