Cabanas and outdoor kitchens

The shade around the water.

A pool gets used when there is shade, a place to eat and somewhere to sit after dark. We build the cabanas, kitchens and bars around the pool, planned with it from the start.

Cabana with a fireplace, TV and lounge chairs under a timber roof
Cabanas

A place to end up

A cabana at the far end of the pool gives the yard a destination. TV, fireplace and seating under a solid roof, facing back across the water toward the house.

  • Face it toward the pool and the house, not the fence
  • Run its power and gas with the pool utilities
  • Match the roof and finishes to the house

Cook facing the water

Grill, sink, ice maker and fridge under a timber pavilion, with a counter that looks out at the pool so whoever is cooking is still part of the afternoon.

  • Gas, water, drain and power trenched with the pool plumbing
  • A counter that faces the pool, with seating on the other side
  • Shade over the cook, not just over the guests

Patio bars

Steps from the pool, out of the sun

Bar seating and a kitchen under a covered patio, a few steps from the water. On a smaller lot, this does the job of a cabana without taking up more yard.

  • Close to the back door and the indoor kitchen
  • Out of the afternoon sun

Why plan them together

One yard, one plan

1

One trench

Gas, power and water for the cabana and kitchen go in while the yard is already open for the pool.

2

One deck

The deck ties the pool, the cabana and the kitchen together instead of meeting at awkward seams.

3

One schedule

One team and one timeline instead of three contractors working around each other.

Common questions

Cabana and kitchen questions

Can you build the cabana or kitchen after the pool?

Yes, but the gas, power and water lines are easier to run while the yard is already open for the pool. If a cabana or kitchen is likely later, have the lines stubbed out during the pool build.

Does an outdoor kitchen need a permit?

Inside city limits, a kitchen with gas, electrical or plumbing generally needs permits and licensed trades. Outside city limits the rules are different, so confirm with your city or county before you build.
